The past 2.5 weeks we have been stateside catching up with family. Our first stop was to Matt’s home town of Lincoln, Nebraska where we struggled to get over jet lag & caught up with a couple of Matt’s high school buddies.
Later that week we drove 575 miles North to Isle O’Dreams Lodge, Park Rapids, Minnesota where we spent a week with the Curtis Clan in honor of Mrs C’s 70th birthday earlier this year. This was my first time to Isle O’Dreams/Park Rapids area but for the Curtis’ it was simply returning to their summer vacation spot where they spent summers creating treasured memories many moons ago.
Our week went something like this…
Many fish were caught, as well as weeds, trees, and even a lure
worms were slaughtered, much to my disgust Eden enjoyed doing the slaughtering
the dock not only became a place of fishing but very quickly a meeting place, a place to sun yourself, to sit and to watch & to catch minnows
cigars were even enjoyed on the dock with a cheeky whiskey and/or cognac
of course this was where the tubing took place.
The youngest girls loved searching for snail shells, they collected them (often still with snails inside) and kept them in a plastic cup. Eden wanted to bring her snail shell collection back to Japan. She didn’t get her way.
We rode the paddle boats, even had a race and I am sad to say our boat lost
there were even stand up paddle boards.
There was a birthday celebration
smore’s happened too.
We took a trip to Itasca State Park and the Headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi River
no trip is complete without a family photo by the sign
many attempted to cross the headwaters, only a few fell
we attempted to get a family photo.
There was some kayaking action
even a spot of karaoke, sadly Carrie & Cathy closed out the show before I was able to get a turn 😉
The dinghy got many rides, some more successful than others
Matt loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.
We managed to squeeze in a run, the annual FireCracker 5K at Park Rapids (I placed 140 out of 413 females and 31/79 for my age group, which ended at 29 so I was one of the oldies in my bracket!)
Eden had her first introduction to poppers & smoke bombs on July 4th
Sam encouraged her to aim the poppers at Grandpa’s feet
later this happened.
We tried to get a photo of all the Grandkids, sadly Clio was a grump and missed out on the photo action.
Clio made a new friend
We visited Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in Bemidji
the girls searched for shells & feathers
we admired the views at Bemidji
and of course took a selfie (Eden was too cool to join in)
Matt loved seeing these gorgeous gals too
No vacation is complete without a trip to the spa.
A highlight for me was watching Eden hang out with her cousins; childhood playmates that grow up to be forever friends
Our last night Papa finally got some cuddles with his favorite 4 year old
We of course had to get a photo of Mr & Mrs C with all nine of their awesome Grandchildren.
We left Isle O’Dreams with many itchy bites, a few extra pounds, one less fishing pole and many many memories to treasure.
