When people ask us what we like about Okinawa our answer ALWAYS includes ‘the food’ there are so many choices here and more often than not it’s very reasonably priced, however I never get around to writing about some of the great places we eat at, mostly because we have licked the plate clean before the thought of taking a photo has crossed my mind. A post about food really isn’t all that great without photos, after all!
I was first introduced to Cafe Unizon by a couple of fellow Kiwi’s also living on Okinawa and it has been a frequent stop for us ever since. Located just a 5 minute drive from home its super handy to get to and there is usually a decent amount of parking; something that often puts me off trying out new places.
It’s actually located above a shop, Mix Style-Life, which sells funky furniture and home decor items and is always worth a quick browse. From time to time we come away with the odd thing!
As you walk into cafe the first thing you notice are lots of books, they have books for sale as well as books and newspapers to read while you eat. It was here that I found a rather used copy of The Cafe Book and started taking photos of all these amazing looking cafes I wanted to try, in the end we asked if they sold said book. They didnt but there became the hunt to get my hands on a copy; which we did at the bookstore in Hamby Town.
The menu is limited but I have yet to have a bad meal; my usual is the ‘Curry Set’; the curry changes daily, is always vegetarian and has never disappointed. Yesterday Matt tried the ‘Authentic Set’ which was very similar to mine, but instead of curry he had a spicy soup type dish and some herbed chicken. The kids enjoyed a bacon and avocado baguette.
We try not to sample the delicious sweets for the sake of our waistline but yesterday we couldn’t help ourselves, we ordered one berry sundae type dessert (which contained toasted oats) and one tea cheesecake(?) both were delicious, but the sundae was the hit!
I think this would be a neat place for a date night too I have seen in the past that they sometimes have live music and they do have a few alcoholic beverages too!
