Christmas is over as quick as it came, I always find this time of year bittersweet; Christmas is hands down my favorite holiday and I love almost everything about the festive season however once Christmas day is over I am always ready to get the house back to normal as well as get our schedules back on track.
This Christmas wasn’t our most ‘Christmasy’, Matt was working some strange hours, from 12 hour night shifts to long days which meant that things I had hoped to do like eat at Christmas themed restaurants, visit Christmas lights and a plethora of other activities didn’t happen.
Having said all that we still had a fantastic month; we drank way too many hot chocolates (with all the trimmings), decorated salt dough decorations, hosted a small Christmas Party for Eden and some of her friends (and my friends too!) where they played games, turned cupcakes into edible ornaments and of course had a jolly old time! We also attended a Christmas party hosted by our neighbors which was a lot of fun.
We all got to watch Eden in her school holiday program where she sang a couple of songs with her class and even received a gift from the man in red! Clio munched on snacks which she found hidden in my handbag while the rest of us enjoyed some wonderful Christmas music by the 3rd MEF Band; definitely plan on doing this again next year and we made lots of christmas crafts.
We didn’t do as many good deeds for others that we would have liked, completely our fault but we did manage to sneak a couple in there…One night we went for dinner and I tried to order a hot chocolate sadly the restaurant didn’t have it on the menu, but when the waiter brought out everyones meals he brought me a hot chocolate saying “don’t tell the manager but I knew how much you wanted one so I made you one from my own stash!” how nice was that, so naturally Matt & I decided to leave him a tip greater than the cost of our meal (this sounds way more impressive than it was; our entire bill came to less than $20!) with a little Merry Christmas note, I hope we made his night like he made mine!
Our Christmas was full of our usual Christmas traditions which we started way back at Eden’s first Christmas. Matt & Eden made cinnamon rolls on Christmas Eve, we even let Eden stay up 1.5 hours past her usual bedtime to do this and when it came time to putting her to bed she informed us she was going to stay up all night to try and catch a peek of Santa, I walked past her room just 5 minutes after she had gone to bed and she was snoring her little head off! Matt & I then got to watch our favorite Christmas movie, Love Actually.
I woke to the sound of rustling in the hall and when I opened our bedroom door saw a glimpse of an extremely excited 4 year old running down the hall. We have a rule in our house that the kids aren’t to get out of bed before 7am so I thought it was hilarious that Eden was up at 6am scooting around the house, peeking in stockings and touching the mounds of presents under the tree; she had even started sorting a pile of her own presents.
When I asked her what time it was she replied honestly with “I have no idea, I just really wanted to see if Santa had been” and it was evident he had by the full stockings, half eaten cookies and empty glass of chocolate milk that Eden had laid out for him the night before. Since we are unsure what Santa’s favorite snack is we try new things every year, so far we have discovered he prefers cookies over koala crackers and pink sprinkles over red or green ones. He also prefers chocolate milk to eggnog!
The next hour and 10 minutes until Clio woke up was excruciatingly long for Eden as we have another rule; we all have to be present for the opening of our stockings & gifts and that it was in all of our best interests if we let Clio wake naturally. Poor Matt, who was trying to catch a few more zzz’s, kept getting woken by Eden asking when he & Clio were going to wake so when we finally heard Clio’s giggles Eden was so busy asking Matt when she would wake it took a good 5 minutes before she finally heard her!
We opened our stockings in our bed as we always do before enjoying our homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Then we opened gifts.
Eden was ‘santa’ a.k.a the person who distributes everyones gifts to them, a role that I used to have as a child! Then we took turns at opening our gifts. Clio opened her gift from Eden first…a set of princess dress-up items; Eden put a lot of thought into what she wanted to get Clio and it most definitely paid off, this was hands down Clio’s favorite gift of the day and after opening it had no interest in opening the rest of her gifts! Eden then opened her gift from Clio; a box of “The little mermaid” themed lego; her reaction was priceless and she quickly gave Clio the biggest kiss & hug. I love their relationship.
Matt & I made a conscious decision to not go overboard with the girls gifts this year and I think for the most part we succeeded; the girls each received new pajamas (which they opened on Christmas Eve, before having a race to see who get them on the quickest) a book and a toy each (Clio a cabbage patch doll & Eden a box of lego!). Santa filled each of their stockings with a sheet of stickers, an ornament for the tree, a pen & notepad, some fun band-aids, playdoh and then a small pack of nano blocks for Eden & a drink bottle for Clio.
Clearly they got plenty but we managed to not break the bank! Of course we all got thoroughly spoilt by Grandparents/parents, aunts/uncles, cousins & friends!
Once we were all dressed for the day we headed out in the car with plates full of goodies such as cake balls & chocolate covered pretzels, which we had been busy working on during the week and handed them out to the gate guards at each gate of a couple of bases. The various reactions we received were awesome and I wished we had filmed it! We had so much fun that we all agreed we will do it again next Christmas but try and cover more bases. Eden even asked if we could do it again today!
We made a quick stop to a mall for some noodles, nothing says Christmas like eating noodles at a mall, and of course since we were at the mall we took some photos at one of the many photo booths.
All this and it was only midday! We were all ready for naps, unfortunately only the littles managed to get one as Matt & I were busy making food and getting the house somewhat clean for our visitors.
We had 2 families over and spent the rest of the day eating, enjoying a couple of adult drinks and chatting while the kids hung out.
It was a great Christmas in fact Eden declared it the ‘Best Christmas Ever’ and is already counting down till the next one!
We hope wherever you are in the world you also had a lovely Christmas and hopefully surrounded by friends &/or loved ones.
