This year has gone by in an amazing whirlwind of fun and adventure, I can’t quite believe in a few hours we will be saying goodbye to 2014 and hello to the year of the sheep; 2015!
I always spend the last day of the year reflecting on the year thats been and think about the year thats to come and usually set a few personal goals.
Here is a tiny selection of the highlights that I remembered whilst doing this today…
We started the year off with a bang by watching the first sunrise at Nakagusuku Bay with hundreds of locals listening to the wonderful sounds of Eisa. This still remains a huge highlight of the year for me. Matt & the girls weren’t overly excited about their early morning start, but once we were there they too thoroughly enjoyed it.
We got to experience our first cherry blossom season; because of the climate/position of Okinawa the blossoms bloom a lot earlier than mainland. I am already looking forward to the cherry blossoms to bloom in the coming weeks and I hope we get to view them at different places this year.
Clio turned 1! she has changed so much this year turning from a baby to a toddler a rather cheeky one at that.
Shortly after her first birthday the girls and I had our first hopping experience where we flew to Matt’s family in Nebraska via, Yokota & Texas and retuned via California and Hawaii where we got ‘stuck’ for a while. We spent a couple of weeks with the Curtis family and it was so incredible special and well worth the effort. Our plan is to attempt this trip again in the Spring, although hopefully it goes a little smoother, regardless I am sure it will be an adventure!
Eden turned the big 4 and had a party to celebrate it, unfortunately we took no photos of her special day, but she had a brilliant day & the next day got to go on the ferris wheel at American Village; something she had been asking to do ever since we arrived in Okinawa.
We had our first visitor, my Mum, a.k.a GG. The timing of her visit was perfect as Matt had to head away for work for a couple of weeks, so it was nice to have some company while he was gone. Eden of course LOVED all the attention and silly games that GG agreed to play with her. She asks regularly when GG is coming back!
We finally got a chance to take a small trip this month! For our first off island adventure we spent a long weekend in beautiful Kyoto. I think if time allows we would all like to return, a long weekend just wasn’t enough.
A family vacation to America to celebrate a special lady special birthday! We had a few weeks of over indulging, reuniting with old friends and lots of precious family time. We also got to spend a few days in Seattle at the end of our trip before flying back to Okinawa; it was a first time for all of us and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about Seattle.
Another fun filled adventure but this time to Hong Kong & Macau; which was hotter & more humid than Okinawa.
Eden started her last year of pre-school; can you believe in less than a year she will be in kindergarten, I sure can’t!
We had our first typhoon of the year (it was actually the second to hit Okinawa; the first one we were Stateside for so missed out on all that fun)
Simply Ania took some gorgeous photos of our family; the last time we got professional photos taken Eden was 6 months old! We were well overdue and I will absolutely treasure these photos for many years to come.
I turned 30!
Matt & I ran (and walked) the Shouhashi Half Marathon, it was so unbelievably hard! We both would like to run another half in 2015 although I highly doubt we will ever be brave/stupid enough to run Shouhashi again!
Eden & I spent a wonderful long weekend in Seoul, South Korea having some much needed mom/daughter time.
We transitioned Clio into a ‘big bed’ currently it is successful only half the time (as I type this she is napping on the floor by her door)
Of course in between all these highlights we went on many, many adventures around Okinawa usually getting lost, and despite this being one of the busiest years for Matt (since I have known him) we always made the most of our time together as a family. If we hadn’t seen him in a while we would often bring him lunch or dinner so that we could get to chat to him even if only for a few minutes.
I am actually kind of sad to see 2014 go, it really was a great year with so many memories made, having said that I am sure 2015 will be as equally great if not better! We hope to continue to make the most of this beautiful sub-tropical paradise, hopefully we will get a couple of off-island trips in and of course next year the girls will no doubt reach more milestones that will be a privilege to be apart of.
My own personal goals for the coming year, to take more photos but to also be in more photos! I would like to take 1 family photo a month; I tried this in 2013 but only managed to get 8 out of 12 months. I hope to make time to run and to read. Enjoy our girls; the last year that they will both be at home with me during the day and of course I am looking forward to doing all of this with my love, Matt.
Do you reflect on your year or set goals (or resolutions) for the coming year?
