The Okinawa Peace Memorial Park is located South of the island and was the location of the final battle of Okinawa in the second world war.

There are over 50 monuments located on the grounds from other prefectures and organizations in memory of those lost in the 90 day battle.

We spent about three hours wandering around all but 2 monuments and finished our visit at The Cornerstone of Peace; where the names of more than 200,000 people whom lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa have been inscribed, both military & civilian and all nationalities as a prayer for eternal world peace.

The grounds are well kept and it is just a really beautiful tribute. We plan on visiting again to do everything else we missed, three hours just wasn’t nearly enough time…

    • I have never heard of the Arizona Memorial but I will definitely add it to my “when we move to America” list that I have started! The Cornerstone of Peace where they have thousands of names written, is really powerful 😦

      • Well it is the same time. It is the attack on Pearl Harbor, where the USS Arizona was sunk along with several other ships. I have a post about it. You can still smell and see the oil leaking from the ship.

      • oh dear lol, we have so talked about this before! When you said Arizona I just assumed it was something in the state of Arizona lol
