Ikei Island (take 2) | Oodomari Beach/Mamasan Beach & another funky house!

Can you believe its been over a year since we visited Ikei Island! We loved it the first time we went so not really sure why it has taken this long to get back, I guess when you live on an island full of gorgeous beaches and various nooks and crannies to explore its not all that surprising, sad but true.

This time instead of heading to the beach we went to last time we tried out Oodomari Beach (also called Mamasan Beach) with some friends who had been before and raved about the snorkeling.

The first thing I noticed was the little beach houses up on the cliff, throughout the day they constantly caught me eye.  When we left we drove around them and decided that they were holiday homes but actually we have no clue!

I was surprised at how big the waves were and that it got relatively deep pretty quickly which is a little nerve wrecking with kids…they didn’t same to mind one bit though.

Matt has taken a liking to snorkeling so he really enjoyed this beach because apparently there were ample fish to see and while I never went, I think I am a little apprehensive from that time a fish bit my foot, I could tell that were loads of fish because there were schools of them swimming near the shoreline where we were!

The downside of this beach is the cost…500 Yen an adult and 300 Yen a child! It is a gorgeous beach and like I said the snorkeling is great but its hard to pay 1,600 Yen for a trip to the beach when there are so many other nice beaches around where you dont have to pay.

When it was time to go we went on the hunt for the funky ‘house’ we found last year which we found and it hadn’t changed one bit! What we weren’t expecting to find was a similar house a couple streets back with the same funky siding.

I know we wont leave it so long to visit Ikei again as there are a couple of eating spots I want to try and apparently more beaches!

  1. Man you are so good at bringing your camera everywhere. I need to be better but it’s so hard with little kids! And we live that beach too! The sand is amazing

    • I try to take it everywhere since I am trying to do a 365 (take a photo every day for a year!) and of course the few times I leave it at home I miss some great photo ops, so yeah I do pretty much take it with me all the time! The sand was amazing! I was just surprised at the size of the waves but our friends said it wasn’t usually like that…we’ll have to go back to see!

  2. When I went to that beach there were definitely waved too, and I found the fish to be a bit too stalkey for my liking. It’s a nice beach, but it’s not my favourite (especially cause it’s an hour drive from my place!)

    • The fish were everywhere! I also really liked the other beach on Ikei we went to last year, although I think its more of a swimmer beach than a snorkeling beach.

  3. Oh my gosh that house is pretty amazing!!! I love it. I’m glad your girls had fun at that beach and kids will always think their dads look weird whenever they are wearing something not “normal” haha!

  4. I agree with the price. LOVE that beach, but with so many pretty and free beaches it’s hard to justify going often

    • I think we will definitely go back it’s nice to have decent snorkeling and nice sand…something for everyone! I think I would prefer it if you just had to pay for parking!!

  5. Ikei is one of my favorite little islands around Oki! I have a post I’ll be writing soon about some historic areas and another funky house/ art installation! Your pictures are always wonderful. What lens do you find yourself carrying the most?

    • I can’t wait to read about your funky house! I’m a huge fan of art in all forms! Um i tend to use a 35mm 1.4 for at home/inside and often outside too and then a 17-40mm or a 24-105mm when we are out an about!
