The past 2 years we have made it down to Naha for the annual Tsuboya Pottery Festival but I have yet to blog about it!
The event is taking place this weekend so thought it was a good time to get the info out there in case anyone fancies picking themselves up some gorgeous pottery…at a discount.
You may have already checked out the stores located on Tsuboya Street, I know I love browsing down that area and imagining my house full of all the gorgeous ceramics but this festival is actually located at the Tsuboya Elementary School.
What is different about going to the festival as opposed to checking out the stores themselves…for starters a lot of the ceramics are offered at a discount (generally 20%), but wait there is more!
They also hold an auction, although I have never actually been there for that and not sure if its daily or just held on one particular day.
You can try your hand at making a piece of pottery yourself and one year they had a goat you could walk!!
Steaming bowls of Soba are available to purchase and I could be wrong but I think the proceeds go to the school; you will notice a lot of school-age children doing various jobs throughout the festival.
My favorite part is the raffle, even though I am yet to win!
If you spend over a certain amount you will receive a ticket, you take that ticket to a tent which has lots of potteries on display and you get to pick out a piece of paper. If your piece of paper has a number on it then you get to choose an item from the display.
They also have pottery races of some sort, of course the language barrier means we don’t actually know what’s happening but it is always fun to watch!
